Text Box: THE STONEHOUSE GANG’S BURNEL JOURNAL 90-92 Burnel Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham B29 5SN Autumn 2006

Text Box: Chairman’s Introduction For the last seven years we have been fortunate in having Councillor Sue Anderson as the Chair of our Council. She has been a really enthusiastic supporter, an excellent leader and we shall miss her. It is wonderful that she is prepared to continue her links with the Gang by becoming one of our Vice Presidents and we hope that she will find time to visit us and keep in touch. She handed over her responsibility at Honours Night on 21st September and once again it was a very special night with awards being received by so many children and young people for their achievement and commitment during the past year. The Honours system was set up by Harry Webb very early in the Gang’s history and has survived ever since. This year, new images were projected on screen, to explain what the awards meant and how the Gang’s Honours system worked. Once again our Leaders have provided a very full programme all year long and there are very few days in the year when our centre in Burnel Road is not a hive of activity. I know it doesn’t “just happen”. It takes ideas and planning to make any club night a success and this Autumn Lesley and Rob have reorganised the club programme to make it different and more appealing. Increased attendances are the proof of its success. This is the first of a new style of Burnel Journal and I hope you like it. We felt it needed some pictures and an easy to read format. On the back page you will find some details of how you may be able to help the Gang. We need all the help you can give us, to maintain the good work and and keep the Gang growing. It is not easy and without the support of numerous donors, small and large, we could not survive and carry on the work we do in making a real difference to the lives of so many kids in our neighbourhood. Please help us if you possibly can or even introduce us to someone who might like to help us. As the new Chairman of the Council I have much to learn but I do know already that we have two dedicated leaders and many wonderful voluntary staff and they deserve our continuing thanks for all they do. Text Box: A note from our retiring Chairman Birmingham City Council has to produce a Performance Plan each year setting out its aspirations and how it will meet those. In this plan the Council wants to encourage and support vibrant villages, community pride and community involvement. The Stonehouse Gang promotes all of these aspirations through the work carried out for, and with, the young people and the local community. The Gang is an important part of the community with a long history of developing the talents and aspirations of children and young people, the lessons learnt being carried on into adult life. The Gang activities promote the skills of the individual and encourage working as a team. As they get older, many giving back time to the new generation and having a great deal of fun and enjoyment at the same time. The Gang flourishes because of the hard work and dedication of Lesley and Rob and “their army” of volunteers who fund raise, paint, decorate, repair, in fact do whatever is necessary to keep the Gang and the cottage in good repair. My thanks go to them, the General Council Members and David, our Treasurer, who makes sure we account for every penny. It is with regret that I am standing down as Chair this year because of the pressures of my workload. I shall be a continuing supporter of the Gang and want to continue to be involved. The Stonehouse Gang is the best Gang to belong to and to be associated with. Councillor Sue Anderson
